Compassionate support. Real understanding. Meaningful change
Compassionate support. Real understanding. Meaningful change
My aim is to empower you to gain deeper self-understanding, navigate life’s challenges and build lasting emotional wellbeing through compassion, genuine empathy and professional guidance.
Taking the first step to talk to someone can feel difficult, but you don’t have to face things alone.
I provide a safe, confidential and supportive environment where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences openly, without the fear of being judged.
Hi, I’m Russ. I am a qualified counsellor holding a Postgraduate Diploma in Transactional Analysis Counselling and I am also a registered Mental Health Nurse working within the NHS. Alongside my counselling practice, my work within NHS mental health services has involved supporting individuals experiencing a wide range of psychological and emotional difficulties. This has given me a strong understanding of both the clinical and personal aspects of mental health.
I offer a safe, confidential, and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly about what is happening in your life—whether you are dealing with past experiences, current challenges, or changes in your circumstances. I understand that reaching out for support can feel difficult, and I aim to provide an environment where you feel respected, heard, and supported throughout the process.
My work is based on Transactional Analysis, a therapeutic approach that helps you understand how past experiences and learned patterns can influence the way you think, feel, and relate to others today. By developing greater awareness of these patterns, you can begin to make conscious choices about how you respond, helping you move towards healthier relationships and a stronger sense of self.
My approach is relational, meaning I place importance on building a genuine and trusting therapeutic relationship. I tailor your therapy to your individual needs, working at a pace that feels comfortable for you while helping you explore patterns, develop insight, and move towards meaningful and lasting change.

Below are examples of the areas in which I support clients to explore, process, and achieve positive change:

Individual counselling provides you with a private and confidential space to talk about whatever is affecting you. This may include anxiety, low mood, stress, trauma, feeling overwhelmed, grief or self‑esteem. Together, we will explore your experiences at a pace that feels right for you, helping you develop insight, coping strategies and a clearer sense of direction.

Relationships can be deeply rewarding, but they can also face challenges. Couples counselling offers a structured and supportive environment where both partners can express themselves openly, improve communication and work through difficulties together.

Group offers a supportive and structured space where individuals can come together to share experiences, gain perspective and learn from one another in a safe and confidential environment. Many people find comfort in realising they are not alone in their struggles, and group sessions can help reduce feelings of isolation while building confidence in expressing thoughts and emotions

Face-to-face sessions provide a private and dedicated space to talk, free from everyday distractions.

Online sessions allow you to access support from your own home, offering convenience while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

Telephone sessions can feel less intimidating than video or face-to-face meetings and can be a good option if you value privacy or have limited access to a quiet space.

Walk and talk sessions take place outdoors and combine gentle movement with conversation. Many people find that being side-by-side and in nature makes it easier to open up and speak freely.

Starting counselling can feel unfamiliar, especially if it is your first time speaking to a therapist. Your first session is an opportunity for us to talk about what has brought you to counselling and what you would like to gain from it.
There is no pressure to share everything straight away. We will work at a pace that feels comfortable for you, and you are always in control of what you choose to discuss.
Over time, sessions may help you:

Please reach me at: russell.discoverycounselling@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or struggling to cope with your thoughts or emotions, counselling can provide a space to explore these experiences and find ways to move forward.
The length of time it takes to see results from counselling sessions varies depending on the individual and the issues being addressed. Some clients may see improvements after just a few sessions, while others may require longer-term therapy. This is something we can review together as we work.
Yes. Everything discussed in sessions is confidential, with the exception of situations where there is a risk of serious harm to yourself or others, in line with professional and ethical guidelines.
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and to discuss what has brought you to counselling. You will have the space to talk about any difficulties you are experiencing, whether they relate to past experiences, current challenges, or changes in your life.
We will also discuss practical aspects such as confidentiality, how sessions work, and what you can expect if you decide to continue. There is no pressure to share more than you feel comfortable with, and you are free to ask any questions at any time.
If you are considering counselling or would like to ask any questions, you are very welcome to contact me.
